#GXDD8J Holland America Ryndam Ship

Like Holland America's other ships, the Ryndam houses a fine collection of art and artifacts that pay tribute to early Dutch exploration. The two levels of the main dining room are connected by a pair of grand curved staircases; on the upper level, a string quartet plays during dinner. The Vermeer Show Lounge, named after the 17th-century Dutch painter, has a tulip theme and features state-of-the-art sound and lighting. Sip a cappuccino in the Java Café, catch a movie in the Wajang Theater or relax by the Lido pool, which sits beneath a retractable glass dome. There's a second pool and two deck tennis courts, and the Ocean Spa has a juice bar and massage, sauna and steam rooms. One of the most unique features is the Culinary Arts Center, a state-of-the-art show kitchen with plasma video screens and cooking display counters -- a must-see for food and wine enthusiasts. The casino offers blackjack, Caribbean poker, roulette, dice and 97 slot machines. This ship has a large number of cabins and suites with private verandas.

Grand Cayman Tours Well, I hope this strange monsoon disappears before you get down here.  In all the years I have spent January in the islands, I have never seen this kind of rain.  Anyway,  if it is water activities you want, I would book an excursion to Eden Rock which is a dive site in the harbor which is quite beautiful.  It is a favorite beginning scuba site, but I only snorkel and I enjoyed it several years back.  If you do that, then you will be right in town for any shopping and lunch afterward.

Another option is to go into the North Sound where there are trips to sting ray city where you can swim with the rays, but there is also some very beautiful snorkeling to do there.  I will warn you, however, that if you have not gotten in and out of a boat lately, it is not easy, so think about that before you book.  You might just take a boat to Rum Point's dock where you can hang out on the beach and drink rum drinks with lunch and swim.  The water is shallow there quite a ways out, but my son-in-law found snorkeling there a few weeks ago.

If you opt out of the boat, get a ride to Smith's Cove where you can swim and there is some very decent snorkeling accessible from the beach.  It is another  of my favorite spots on the island.

If you hit bad weather, there is a museum right by the landing, there is a turtle farm in West Bay (pricey), or there is a place that has been restored called Pedro Castle that is about a half hour out of town.  The botanical garden is great too but not in bad weather.  Don't bother with the pirate caves or Mission House in Bodden Town.

Too bad I won't still be here.  I could pick you up and do the grand tour.

If you get a chance to try Conch Fritters, don't miss them.  Also the fish here is amazing.

See you when I get back or when you get back.  Enjoy.
